Your auto insurance declaration page is a summary of your car insurance policy. Often it is provided to you by your car insurance company. Sometimes called the dec page, your auto insurance declaration page basically sums up the important information on your auto insurance policy. Name of insured; Usually at the top, you should find the names of one or more the insured. The primary insured is typically first. There can also be more than one named insured. These are considered the policyholders. 

The insured property; Your auto insurance declaration page should include information about the car you drive. Model, year, make and the VIN number. If this was in reference to your home insurance policy the address and certain characteristics of the home would show up.

Policy endorsements and forms; Policy endorsements have certain forms that detail the ins and out of your auto insurance coverage. These numbers will show up on you auto insurance declarations page as a point of reference. 

Your agents contract information; Usually found at the bottom of your auto insurance declarations page you should see your insurance agents contact information. The location will differ between insurance companies.

Your auto insurance declaration page is a condensed overview of your auto insurance policy in whole. It will outline your personal information and what is covered within your policy. 

Most policies will be different in some way, but for the most part you can count on these listed below to be contained within your auto insurance declaration page;

  • Name of insured and address
  • Name of the insurance agent
  • Name of the insurance company
  • The policy number
  • Policy effective dates
  • Types of perils and damages covered
  • Policy limits, deductibles, and premiums
  • How to file a claim

Your auto insurance declaration page will include the names and details of the types of coverage you’re protected with (for example; liability insurance, collision coverage, comprehensive insurance, and gap coverage). It should also have basic vehicle information such as;

  • Year, make & model of the insured car
  • Mileage on the vehicle
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Drivers that are excluded from the policy
  • Information regarding driving and accident history

How Do I Find and Use My Insurance Declaration Page?

Once you’ve completed your auto insurance transaction, your insurance company should send you a binder of insurance. This will serve as a temporary copy of your auto insurance declaration page. Once you receive this you will want to review it, to confirm the coverage you just took out is correct. You will also be able to use this as temporary insurance proof. This can be used to register a vehicle or to show if you’re involved in an accident. 

You should be mailed a paper copy of your auto insurance policy within a few business days after receiving this. Typically you will find the auto insurance declaration page near the front. In it you will find most if not all of the information we mentioned above. 

When you first receive your auto insurance declaration page you will want to review it. Check for all the common errors like misspellings, if the coverage is what you agreed on, verify the addresses and other personal information, but overall check for anything that doesn’t seem to be correct.
