Insurance coverage for infertility treatments in Washington, D.C. is on the horizon

Insurance coverage for infertility treatments in Washington, D.C. is set to become a reality. Individuals seeking in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments in the District can now breathe a sigh of relief, as health insurance providers will soon be obligated to cover this often expensive medical procedure.

The Expanding Access to Fertility Treatment Amendment Act was recently passed by Congress and signed into law by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Council member Christina Henderson, a co-sponsor of the legislation, emphasized that infertility is a legitimate medical issue and therefore should be covered by medical insurance.

In the District, infertility will now be recognized as a medical diagnosis, providing much-needed relief to those pursuing IVF treatments. Henderson noted that this change will alleviate a significant financial burden and enhance accessibility for individuals looking to undergo IVF procedures.

Henderson also highlighted the exorbitant costs associated with IVF, which can reach upwards of $100,000 to $150,000, making it financially unattainable for many.

Starting next year, individuals covered by DC Healthcare Alliance and Medicaid will have their infertility diagnosis and three cycles of medications covered. In 2025, this coverage will extend to those with health insurance through their jobs in D.C. or through DC Health Link.

It’s important to note that health care coverage for infertility treatments varies from state to state. While Maryland has a similar program to D.C.’s new law, Virginia currently lacks legislation requiring health care companies to cover IVF.
