Within the confusion of an accident, the first thing that comes to mind is, who is at fault? What drivers auto insurance will cover the damages or even worse my injuries and medical care. More often than not, it’s a very difficult decision. Although at times simple enough for the officer on the scene to make an intermediate decision on paper.
Regardless of who’s at fault, who has to pay? Depending on the coverage you have, you may be covered. If you have medical payments coverage within your auto insurance policy, the medical care for your passengers as well as yourself may be covered. This added auto insurance coverage is in place no matters who’s at fault. All the way up to the policies limits.
What is Medical Payments Coverage?
Medical payments coverage provides additional insurance protection within your car insurance policy. It is an add-on to your standard auto insurance policy. It will cover medical for you and your passengers in the event of an accident.
Often called MedPay. It’s a supplemental insurance to your health insurance policy and used in conjunction with your car insurance policy. It’s a great add on insurance product that covers various risks.
Medical payments coverage covers a wide variety of risks. It can cover visits to a physician or medical facility, surgery and x rays, emergency medical technicians fees, nursing & rehabilitation, and it can also cover payments in the form of health insurance deductibles and co pays.
MedPay covers pedestrians
MedPay can potentially help you as a pedestrian as well. If you’re involved in an accident with a pedestrian medical payments coverage may cover their medical attention as well. You will always want to check with a professional agent at Eugene C Yates Insurance Agency first.

Please keep in mind MedPay is an added protection. It’s supplemental car insurance and not everyone has it on their policy. If you need to find out whether or not you have it you should first speak to your auto insurance company.

What’s the different between MedPay and Personal Injury Protection
Similar to MedPay and also no fault insurance, Personal Injury Protection or PIP for short is a different alternative. Personal injury protection will help you to pay for medical costs for you and the passengers in your vehicle at the time of the accident.
The main difference between a PIP and MedPay, is Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay) is design to take care of medical expenses exclusively. Personal injury protection covers a little more. A PIP can cover lost wages and health costs that would otherwise not be included with MedPay.
Auto insurance medical payments vs bodily injury
There is bodily injury liability insurance which will cover damages for the other driver involved in the the accident and personal injury protection which will provide coverage for yourself. MedPay and PIP crossover in many ways but in the end PIP just offers more in the way of coverage.
Bodily injury liability coverage applies to injuries you or anyone insured under your auto insurance policy becomes responsible for as a result of an accident.
MedPay coverage pays for medical expenses incurred by you or passengers in your vehicle. This type of auto insurance will cover you regardless of who is at fault for the accident. One of the agents at Eugene C Yates Insurance Agency can advise you of the coverage your current policy offers. Do I need medical coverage on car insurance if I have health insurance
If you’ve been involved in an accident and require medical care you should do your best to use as much coverage as you have in your PIP and MedPay policies, before filing a claim to your health insurance company. MedPay and PIP does not come with an insurance deductible so you may be able to save more by exclusively using those coverages when applicable.
The majority of health insurance plans have a deductible that you will have to pay out of pocket. If your medical attention needed is covered within the limits of your PIP or MedPay policy, you may not be required to pay anything at all out of pocket.
Another reason to use your PIP and MedPay first is that most health insurance plans have a “subrogation clause.” A subrogation clause states that if you are legally owed any money relating to pay back of health care expenses, your health insurance company will be entitled to that money to help recoup the costs. PIP coverage, and funds from a liability claim, will both fall into this category. It would be best to use your PIP or MedPay allotment first to save a step.
It’s pretty easy to put your health insurance company in contact with your auto insurance company, or maybe they’re the same company. Regardless, once in contact they can figure out the details. Their analysts will determine who pays what and work everything out for you.
How much MedPay should I have
You really can never have enough auto insurance. Especially with the high costs of medical coverage. If you end up in a hospital for a week due to your accident, the cost of being there can add up very quickly. $50 per cotton swab and $100 toilet paper can get expensive after a few days.
If your medical payments coverage only covers you for $1,500, you will be in out of pocket expenses before you know it. Figure out what you need to adequately protect your family and then speak to a professional.
