Billing Relief for U.S. Customers

To ease the financial burden that many individuals and businesses are facing due to COVID-19, Travelers is expanding billing relief for all our U.S. customers.

Specifically, we will suspend cancellation and nonrenewal of coverage due to nonpayment through June 15, 2020. We will not charge interest, late fees or penalties during this period, providing policyholders extra time to pay their premiums without risking cancellation.

We also launched the Stay-at-Home Auto Premium Credit Program, which will automatically give U.S. personal auto insurance customers a 15% credit on their April and May premiums.

We are committed to working with our agents, brokers and customers during these challenging times. For those who are able to make payments, they should do so as they normally would. For Agency Bill accounts where a customer is unable to make payments, please contact us so we can work through this together.

In addition to complying with regulatory requirements, we will continue to monitor ongoing developments related to COVID-19 and adjust as needed.

Our commitment to taking care of our customers has not wavered for over 160 years. Now more than ever, we’ll be there as we navigate these challenging times together.

A message about how we’re supporting our customers during the Coronavirus

At Safeco, the well-being of our customers and employees is always our top priority. We recognize the uncertainty and financial challenges many of you are facing as the nation bands together to slow the spread of coronavirus. To help our customers, we have taken the following actions:

Personal Insurance Customers:

Personal Auto Customer Relief Refund

Fewer drivers are on the road, which means fewer accidents. With this in mind, we are announcing our Personal Auto Customer Relief Refund, which will return approximately $250 million to our customers. Here’s how it works:

  • Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15% refund on two months of their auto premium, based on your premium amount as of April 7, 2020.
  • We are planning to issue the refund in the manner you made your most recent payment or by check.
  • We will begin issuing refunds in the coming weeks, after we have approval from state insurance regulators.
  • Your refund will happen automatically, and you do not need to call us to get your refund.

Relief Refund FAQs

Payment Flexibility Options

We have automatically stopped charging late fees and have temporarily paused personal auto & home coverage cancellations due to non-payment from March 23 through June 1, 2020, or later as directed by your state.

We are also extending payment dates if needed. Please contact us if we can be of assistance.

Download Our Mobile App to Update Your Billing and View Confirmation When Your Refund is Posted

We understand it’s a challenging time. That’s why the Safeco mobile app makes it easy to confirm you’ve received your refund and update your billing preferences, like changing your payment date, if you need to. Refunds will be issued beginning in April and throughout the month of May and may not yet be available to view in your account.

Delivery Coverage Expansion for Auto Policies

We have proactively expanded all our personal auto policies to cover customers who use their personal vehicles to deliver food, medicine, medical supplies, or medical equipment for a commercial purpose. This accommodation does not apply to drivers completing deliveries for a transportation network company or online only delivery platform. This additional protection is already in effect for all personal auto policies in all states for losses occurring from March 16 to May 22, 2020, and reported by July 1, 2020. Additional limitations apply, please contact us for more details.

Changes to Auto & Property Claims Process to Protect Customers and Employees

  • We’ve stopped all in-home damage inspections effective immediately except in emergency situations, such as water damage with an active leak or threat of mold, to avoid having employees entering homes. Whenever possible, we will do in-home inspections through RealTime Review video chat or other video collaboration tools. We will ask customers for their approval before using these tools.
  • Our adjusters will continue to do outside property inspections outside the home with customer permission. Our property adjusters will be following CDC Guidelines, including social distancing and following sanitation guidelines.
  • Auto appraisers will not be visiting customers’ homes or auto body shops except in emergency situations and will follow CDC guidelines. You can submit photographs of vehicle damage online and through our app, including using our new assisted-photo tool which will show you step-by-step how to take damage photos.
  • All other claims employees are working from home to handle claims as quickly as possible. For faster claims processing, we strongly encourage you to file new claims online, to manage claims online, and to use our digital tools including RealTime Review video chat and guided photo capture.
  • We are suspending our Claims Valet Service until further notice except for emergency situations.
  • We’re instructing any vendors who provide services to Safeco to follow the same guidelines.

Our communities

Our philanthropy program is helping people who are experiencing some of the greatest need during this time. Among our many efforts in the U.S., we’ve committed $15 million in crisis grants to community partners helping respond to the coronavirus; given donations to each of the over 800 nonprofits we partner with during our employee volunteering program; further supported employees’ online charitable donations with company gifts; and created an employee phone outreach program to call those in the community who are socially isolated.

Across the globe, our varied and widespread philanthropic efforts range from providing meals to families in India and Hong Kong; donating masks in Singapore; and giving monetary contributions to many local nonprofits.

Measures to Keep Employees Safe and Prevent Spread of Coronavirus

We’ve taken measures to follow CDC guidelines and prevent the spread of coronavirus to our employees and customers:

  • We’ve enabled all our employees to work from home and implemented mandatory work from home across all offices in the US and Canada.
  • All air, rail, and bus travel by employees is restricted through May 29.

We will keep you informed as this situation continues to evolve. In the meantime, stay well and thank you for being a Safeco customer.

Many people are experiencing hardship due to the efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. That emerging trend is prompting Nationwide to offer a one-time premium refund of $50 per policy for personal auto policies active as of March 31, 2020.

The refund will arrive in the next 30 days, subject to individual state regulatory approval. It will be returned to customers in the last form of payment they have made, whether electronic or paper.

Nationwide CEO Kirt Walker says its simply the right thing to do.

“As a mutual company devoted to protecting people, businesses and futures with extraordinary care, we are offering this rapid relief at a time when drivers are making the right choice to stay off the road and remain home to help flatten the curve,” stated Walker.

The refund is equivalent to an average savings of 15 percent for two months and is on top of existing discounts customers already earn.

“Eligible customers don’t need to do anything,” said Nationwide Property & Casualty President, Mark Berven. “Refunds will automatically be credited to the customers’ most recent method of payment within the next 30 days.”

Helping customers and communities during the COVID-19 crisis

Nationwide has taken numerous steps to serve its customers since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.

The company has already been extending payment terms for members experiencing hardship, providing immediate relief for customers looking for ways to make ends meet. The company stands ready to maintain business operations and serve the need of our customers and partners across the country, having moved to a work-from-home posture in mid-March.

To provide support for impacted communities, the Nationwide Foundation made $5 million in contributions to local and national charities to support pandemic response efforts.

“Taking the long view has helped see Nationwide and our members through challenging times for 94 years and, together, we’ll get through this one also,” Walker added.

Progressive; Apron Relief Program

Extra support during the COVID-19 crisis

We hope you and your family are healthy and holding up well through the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19). While COVID-19 is causing disruption in our lives and communities, we’re committed to making sure that you have the protection and support you need.

Introducing the Apron Relief Program

To us, the apron is a symbol of protection. That’s why we’re assisting our customers, employees, communities, and agents by committing over $1 Billion to them in this time of need.

To our customers

Assistance with coverage and payments

During this unprecedented time, we know you may be experiencing stress and financial hardship. While you’re doing your part to fight the pandemic, we’re committed to being there in your time of need. With that in mind, here are some steps we’re taking to make things a little easier:

Personal auto premium credit

  • If you have an active personal auto policy at the end of April or May, you will be receiving a 20% premium credit. There is nothing you need to do. We will calculate your credit for you at the end of that month, and you’ll see it in your Progressive account a few weeks after that. It’s all automatic—our plan is to provide you a confirmation message when each credit is in your account.
    • WHAT YOU NEED TO QUALIFYTo receive a credit of 20% of your April premium, your personal auto policy must be active at the end of April. Similarly, to receive a credit of 20% of your May premium, your personal auto policy must be active at the end of May.
    • WHEN YOU’LL RECEIVE YOUR CREDITWe’ll calculate your credit within a few weeks of the end of April and May. You’ll receive your credit shortly after that.
    • HOW YOUR CREDIT WILL BE APPLIEDOnce we’ve calculated the credit for your policy, we’ll automatically apply it to any outstanding balance or your next bill. And if you’re already paid in full, we’ll return the credit amount directly to your payment account or issue you a check.
    • HOW TO ESTIMATE YOUR CREDITBecause your premium can change throughout the month due to renewal or policy changes you request, we can’t tell you exactly what your credit will be until the end of the month. But you can get a sense of what your credit will be by taking 20% of your normal monthly premium. For example, if your 6-month policy premium is normally $900, one month of premium would be roughly $150. In that situation, you’d be likely to receive a credit of $30 for April. Then, if your policy stays active, you’d receive an additional $30 for May. Keep in mind that unique policy and billing situations may apply. And if you bought a policy after the first of the month, your credit will be prorated—we’ll base it off of the amount of time you were insured with us that month.
  • For more information, please see our premium credit FAQs.
  • These credits are subject to approval by your state regulators.

Coverage assistance

  • We don’t want you to worry about losing your insurance if you can’t pay right now. Starting April 1, 2020, we’ll waive late fees, pause collections, and hold off on canceling or non-renewing any active policies due to non-payment through May 15, 2020. Some states have already issued leniency guidelines, so we will adjust this timeline to either meet or exceed any state-specific requirements.
  • In the meantime, automatic payments will continue to go through unless you tell us to stop them. And after May 15th, any remaining balance on your policy will become due. If you need more support, please don’t hesitate to call us—we’re happy to work with you to manage payments moving forward.

Billing leniency

  • We encourage you to make a payment right now if you’re able to. But if you need extra time, please give us a call—we’re ready to help.
  • If you’ve already requested billing leniency, please be patient with us. Our systems haven’t caught up quite yet, so you’ll continue to receive bills and your Payment Schedule may not reflect your request.

In addition to helping with payments and coverage, we are:

Supporting first responders, health care workers, and delivery personnel

First responders, health care workers, and delivery drivers are at the front lines of the crisis, and we’re doing everything we can to help by:

  • Providing expedited roadside assistance
  • Expanding coverage for personal auto customers who are temporarily delivering food or medicine
  • Offering meal delivery for our for-hire truckers
  • Providing a full-service claims experience for first responders and health care workers who experience a car accident. We’re providing transportation to work and expediting tow and vehicle repairs. And if needed, we’re deferring deductibles and providing a rental vehicle.

Helping customers get back on the road

We know finances might be tight. To help, we’re deferring deductibles for those who need a personal vehicle repaired and can’t pay out of pocket.

Offering tailored solutions

Now more than ever, every customer’s situation is different. Our priority is to keep you covered, so we’re working with customers individually to develop solutions that work for them.

For details on how we’re helping our commercial customers, please visit their dedicated information page.

To our employees

We’ve enabled the vast majority of our employees to work from home. Additionally, we’re supporting our workforce financially by:

  • Providing advances on our annual bonus program
  • Providing advances on vacation days and paid time off for those who are unable to work
  • Covering co-pays for telemedicine visits and the cost of COVID-19 medical treatment

To our communities

We’ve funded an $8 million donation by the Progressive Foundation. This donation will go to charities focused on hunger, health, and homelessness, including Feeding America, the American Red Cross, and the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

We’ve also provided checks totaling over $2 million to all active auto and commercial network shops. Network shops face uncertainty and changing business conditions, and these checks are to be used for any purpose at the shop’s discretion.

To our agents

We’re continuing to invest in helping our agents succeed by:

  • Donating $2 million to the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big “I”) to establish the Trusted Choice® COVID-19 Relief Fund, which will help independent agencies respond to the economic and operational challenges presented by the coronavirus crisis
  • Enhancing programs for Platinum and Priority agents to provide more opportunities to earn in this changing market
  • Offering producers in our partner programs unlimited access to continuing education courses and increasing opportunities for all producers to earn through our Agent Rewards program
  • Continuing to support agents with 24×7 servicing for their customers and virtual visits from our sales team

COVID-19; We’re giving a 15 percent credit on April and May personal auto insurance bills as part of our COVID-19 Personal Auto Payback Plan. Find out more.

The Hartford; Committed to Our Communities

We’re doing all we can to show our support through the COVID-19 outbreak. Our commitment to stand beside our communities is stronger than ever, and we’re donating to organizations that have been critical in addressing the humanitarian issues caused by this crisis.

First, we’ve taken important steps to protect the health and well-being of our employees and the communities where we work and live while serving our customers, agents and broker partners. We’ve already asked every employee who can work remotely to do so until further notice. We’ve also switched to virtual meetings and canceled or postponed company-sponsored events through April. Having fewer people in our buildings will help us meet social distance recommendations and limit the potential for our employees to get sick. We have the capability to operate with a remote workforce, and we do not anticipate any disruption in our ability to serve customers. We’re working closely with our distribution partners and customers to answer general questions about insurance coverage and service, recognizing that coverage is determined on a case-by-case basis and dependent on facts, circumstances, applicable law and policy language. Since this is a quickly evolving situation, we will adjust our operating policies and practices as need be. Most importantly: Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the pandemic. Our hearts go out to those who are sick or recovering – and to those who are on the front lines caring for others. And, we’re thinking about the people and businesses we insure. While we can’t predict what the next few months will hold, we are committed to doing everything we can to support all of our stakeholders through this challenging time. To stay up to date, please see our helpful resources for business insurance, employee benefits and individuals.
